Claudia Beverly, Director

We are excited that you are visiting our UAMS Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) website.  We have information about all our current educational, research and leadership programs and events.

Our UAMS HCGNE began in 2000 with funds from the John A. Hartford Foundation.  Currently we are completing our 12th year of funding and in the process of applying for renewal for 3 more years.  This proposal to renew our UAMS HCGNE focuses on recruiting new geriatric nurse faculty, advancing faculty development in geriatric nursing, and working with the National Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence.  The National Centers provide universities and organizations an opportunity to join an established network of 8 Harford Centers in the U.S.

We are currently using the Institute of Medicine’s ‘The Future of Nursing Leading Change, Advancing Health’ report recommendations in our planning and implementation for leadership and faculty development programs.  The UAMS HCGNE is very involved with the AR Action Coalition for the Future of Nursing Campaign and will be able to network assist the group about geriatric nursing education needs in the state.

Meeting the health care needs of older Americans by a nurse workforce prepared in gerontology is a daunting task, but the timing for doing so has never been better.  The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 were signed into law in March 2010, giving America’s seniors more control and increased access to health care.  The majority of the initiatives in this reform, however, will require a nursing workforce with expertise in gerontology to care for seniors’ needs, from primary care to chronic conditions.

Our website allows you to browse awards of students, information about our geriatric leadership team and faculty and events by the Center.  You will also have the opportunity to link to other Hartford Centers and resources for geriatric nursing education.  Please contact us if you need more information about the UAMS HCGNE.
